What Successful Business Owners Should Evaluate Now
If you own a successful business and have been thinking, “Should I franchise my business?” 2027 may be the year you explore the answer.
After more than 20 years in franchise operations, I’ve learned that a great business and a great franchise opportunity are not automatically the same thing.
Franchising isn’t simply about duplicating what you built. It’s about creating a business someone else can successfully operate…with your systems, your brand, and your support, without you standing beside them every day.
And right now, there are some compelling reasons to have that conversation.
Franchising Continues to Grow
The International Franchise Association’s 2026 Economic Outlook projects approximately 845,000 franchise establishments in the U.S. in 2026, an increase of roughly 12,500 locations, with franchise employment approaching 8.9 million jobs.
There are also encouraging signs from prospective business owners. Recent Franchise Insights research found that 51.4% of surveyed aspiring entrepreneurs considered buying a franchise, compared with 45.9% considering starting an independent business from scratch and 40.5% considering buying an existing business. Respondents could select multiple options, so these aren’t mutually exclusive groups, but they demonstrate continued interest in the franchise model.
Now that doesn’t mean every successful business should become a franchise.
It means owners with the right business have an opportunity worth evaluating.

So, Is Your Business Ready to Franchise?
Here are the questions I encourage owners to ask before deciding how to franchise a business:
Can someone else replicate your success? If your business only works because of your personality, relationships, or daily involvement, there’s more work to do. A franchise owner (franchisee) needs a repeatable playbook…not access to you 24/7.
Are your systems documented? Think operations, hiring, training, marketing, sales, customer experience, technology, and financial controls. If most of the business still lives inside your head, it’s difficult to teach someone else to reproduce it.
Do the economics work for someone other than you? A franchisee needs a realistic path to building a sustainable business after royalties, fees, labor, occupancy, and other operating expenses. Your economics have to make sense from their side of the table, too.
Are you prepared to become a franchisor? This is the question owners sometimes overlook. You’re not simply expanding your existing company. You’re creating another business inside of a business. Your franchisees become your core customers.
That requires training, communication, marketing, leadership, and ongoing support.
Think Like a Captain, Not Just a Passenger
I often compare franchising to taking a boat you’ve successfully captained and building an entire fleet.
You already know how to navigate your boat.
Now you need the systems, training, navigation tools, and support that allow other captains to reach the destination without you grabbing the wheel every five minutes.
That’s the difference between having a successful business and having a franchise-ready business.
And the marketplace is getting more sophisticated.
Franchise development teams are diversifying how they reach candidates across franchise portals, Meta, referral networks, LinkedIn, Google and emerging AI-driven channels.
Franchise Insights reports that more than 88% of surveyed franchise brands expect to use at least one AI tool for lead generation by the end of 2026.
The point here is, launching a franchise isn’t simply creating a franchise disclosure document and waiting for buyers to appear.
If your foundation isn’t solid, franchising will just shine a light on the cracks.

Should I Franchise My Business in 2027?
Maybe.
But the better question is:
If I franchise my business, am I building something other people can successfully operate, grow and believe in?
If you’re considering franchising in 2027, the best time to evaluate your readiness isn’t January. It’s now.
Look at your economics. Pressure-test your systems. Define your ideal franchise owner. Identify what’s dependent on you. And be candid about whether you’re ready to support other business owners…not simply sell them a territory.
Sometimes my job is helping an owner determine how to franchise.
And sometimes it’s helping them realize they should strengthen a few things first.
Both can be good outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions About Franchising Your Business in 2027
Is 2027 a good year to franchise a business?
The market is growing. The International Franchise Association projects about 845,000 U.S. franchise establishments in 2026, and recent Franchise Insights research found 51.4% of aspiring entrepreneurs considered buying a franchise. Whether it is the right year for your business depends on your readiness, so start that evaluation now rather than in January.
Should I franchise my business or keep running it myself?
Franchising makes sense when someone else can replicate your success with your systems and still build a sustainable business after royalties, fees and operating costs. If the business still depends on your personality or daily involvement, strengthen those areas first.
What changes when you become a franchisor?
You are creating another business inside your business. Your franchisees become your core customers, and they need training, communication, marketing, leadership and ongoing support from you.
Is a franchise disclosure document enough to launch a franchise?
No. The disclosure document is part of the process, but buyers will not simply appear once it is written. Franchise development teams now reach candidates through franchise portals, Meta, referral networks, LinkedIn, Google and AI-driven channels, and a weak foundation shows quickly once other owners are running your model.
